Beauty Updates!

Beauty News:
American Apparel has recalled all of their nail polish sales because of safety reasons.

Julia Roberts has reportedly signed a $12.5 million contract with Lancôme to be the new face of their ads. She is also joining Kate Winslet as a global ambassador of the company. At 42 and with 3 kids, Roberts is still stunning.

Check out the make-up from the most recent Christian Dior runway show, where 19th century thoroughbred designs and big hair were seen

Bumble & Bumble is coming out with a new hair product collection called Wear and Care that is devoted to repairing, protecting, and strengthening damaged tresses. There are two options, either Mending or Quenching and each set comes with shampoo, a light-weight conditioner, an intensive hair masque and a potent leave-in complex that targets chemical damage from coloring and manual damage from using heated-tools. This line won't be available until March, but sounds fantastic!

At the Paris and Brazil couture runway shows, these hairstyle were spotted on more than just one runway...what do you think of this funky look?

Fashion Do's and Dont's: Denim on Denim

Denim is big this season, but even bigger is (eek!) denim on denim. After always thinking of matching denim outfits as a major faux pas, I found, after seeing a few of these matching outfits this season, that the look is surprisingly cool and laid-back. Doubling up on denim can sometimes not look so good...

Interesting fact- William Rast (Justin Timberlake's line) was one of the first collections to present us with the emerging double denim trend (first shown in his 2009 Fall/Winter collection).
How to rock this look? First, top and bottom must be two different shades! Even better is dark denim on the bottom and light on top. Second, try to separate the two shades of denim if they are close to one another, like putting a brown belt on. Brown is the best color to pair up your matching denim look because it's so neutral. Third, it's best to avoid those acid wash colored jeans, too much of that does just not look good. Lastly, keep this whole look simple, you don't need to add anything else but a few small accessories or jacket.

Preen's New and More Affordable collection, Preenline

Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi (life-partners) have been the designers and creators of their line Preen since 1996. Their line has an everyday-cool vibe to it and consists mostly of slouchy yet elegant jersey or silk dresses. Since being in New York's Fashion Week in 2007 their line has gained international status. At their spring fashion shows, celebrities like Kate Bpsworth, Alexa Chung, and Diane Kruger were all there and loving the mini dresses shown. Now though, the designers have made a sister-collection called Preenline, a less-expensive version of the clothing but all with similar designs. Their idea is to make past treasures that were most popular during the season they came out into more affordable versions of those creations. Some of the designs they have "re-created" is the Hobbie dress from 2006 which is a versatile wrap-around dress with tiered skirts, but that now is patterned, the Power dress also from 2006 and worn by Amy Winehouse, some leggings, jackets, and pants as well. The great thing is their Preenline looks just as nice as Preen does and is now available on Net-a-Porter.

Oh and check out these fun floral Viktor and Rolf sandals!

2010 SAG Awards

The Screen Actors Guild Awards were held this past week and I have to say I loved these dresses more than the ones at the Golden Globes!! Here are some of my favorite dresses from awards night! (Not in any order)

Wow Kate Hudson! Drop-dead gorgeous in this backless Emilio Pucci dress and Cartier jewels.

Also in white was Marion Cotillard in Elie Saab Haute Couture, Chopard jewels and Judith Leiber clutch. I love how that emerald ring just pops!!

Diane Kruger (Karl Lagerfeld's muse and one of my favorite trendsetters) really pulled it off in this mustard colored Jason Wu gown, which she paired with Harry Winston jewels and bright red lips.

Lea Michele (from Glee) looked radiant in this plunging emerald Catherine Malandrino dress.

I could not find a picture that really showed how amazing this color blue looked on Christina Applegate, it was the perfect color for her! Of course, it was custom-made by Roberto Cavalli.

I love everything about Mariska Hargitay's Vera Wang dress...the color, the fit, BEAUTIFUL!

So daring and so funky! United States of Tara star (such a funny show!), Toni Collette looked phenomenal in this strapless, beaded, ivory and blush colored Rafael Cennamo gown. Props for pulling this look off!

Sorry for filling everyone in so late today! Back to school this week and had classes all day!

Trend Report: Saddle Straps

Saddle straps on your handbags and watches are the next big thing, one in a nice warm brown color is the best. Since comfortable utilitarian staples have made it bag to the runway, so have these bags and watches. "The utilitarian cycle is at a time when we are living in survival mode in terms of the economy," says designer Phillip Lim". People have been craving for functionality and what they think is important during troubled economic times and fashion has responded in the right way to these cravings. Think about worn olive-green jackets with ruffled organza at the Marc Jacobs show, classic denim at Ralph Lauren, khaki colors at Philip Lim, or trenches at Burberry Prorsum. Even stores such as the Gap, J.Crew and Banana Republic have clothes similar to these designers. Leather straps on your watches have become the "it" look because of its functionality yet classic look. But, the saddlebag is quickly becoming the best accessory to have because it adds just the right touch of utilitarian style to your look without having to overdo it. Saddlebags were seen at Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo, Celine, Derek Lam, and Dooney & Bourke to name a few. If you aren't ready to spend the big bucks on this trend, Urban Outfitters has tons of saddlebags for under $50! Here are 2 looks from the runway.

Loving this Moschino Cheap & Chic handbag!

This bag has such a slouchy and soft feel to it and the big bow design makes it an absolute must-have splurge! Purchase here for $675

So, who wore what best this week? First, Ashley Olsen! I have not seen her mentioned once for looking so fab at a Golden Globes after party in this super cute Erdem royal blue minidress.

Camilla Belle was seen in this unique Valentino dress and Cartier jewels at the Art of Elsyium Gala this week. The Art of Elsyium recruits actors, artists and musicians to volunteer their time to offer creative workshops to children battling life-threatening medical conditions.

Kate Bosworth was seen there too looking absolutely stunning in an Alexander McQueen gown shown here with Camilla Belle.

The Frugal Friday Four under $50!!

Here's the Frugal Friday Four!

I really love leather bracelets, but this bracelet just made me love them more! It's a black leather wrap bracelet painted over in gold, so fun! It's $30 at Bloomingdales

Converse has come out with sneakers in 3 neon colors- pink, blue and green. For $39.95 it's a good buy because you can wear them with anything (everyone's seen the classic punk rock princess wearing her prom dress with them!) and they're super comfy!

Here's a really pretty and soft navy wrap blouse. If you've been wanting to try the big shoulder look but think it's too extreme, this is a perfect balance.

Denim anything is big this spring so check out this tight-fitted and ruffled skirt from Topshop

Beauty Updates!

Good News: Avon has donated 1 million dollars to the relief efforts happening in Haiti. It will be split half and half between Doctors Without Borders and the American Red Cross. After Haiti's second earthquake I am so happy to be hearing of all that people are doing to help!

Urban Decay is releasing a limited edition box of shadows inspired by Tim Burton's remake of Disney's classic Alice in Wonderland. There are 16 different eyeshadows (all named and inspired by the movie!) along with a mini Primer Potion and 2 eyeliners! I almost just want to buy it because of the awesome pop-up display when you open the box!

“Burton is dark and edgy, yet everything he does is really beautiful at the same time. I felt it was a perfect match for Urban Decay to do a palette based on his vision.”
- Wende Zomnir (Urban Decay's creative director and co-founder)

Chanel's newest it-color for nail polish, 'Particullare' looks like plain old light-brown to me, but hey I'm willing to try it! I might have to throw some glitter on top...

Here are some sneakers I made for my sister!

Fashion Do's and Dont's: Pattern Play

This has to be one of my favorite trends EVER! I love mixing patterns and colors, it's such a unique way to showoff all the things you like in one outfit!! Mix up lace, prints, colors, sparkles, everything! How to pull this off right? First, pick a color palette. If you have one base, say pink, you can implement colors within that colors range, like purples and reds. If you want though, add a few smaller pops of color into the outfit, it makes it a little more funky. Second, mix your patterns. When mixing it up keep the patterns different sizes, think large florals, medium sized stripes, and smaller geometric graphics. If you have big everything it will throw your mind a thousand different ways! This season, tribal patterns are big too so if you need to add some key patterned pieces into your closet, that's one thing to buy. Here are some designs that use pattern play, but also have different touches that I think could come in handy when trying to find "your" look.

Alexander McQueen, Spring 2010. Extreme mixing! Bright colors, fun designs displayed in different patches but still looking so connected! This one is for the daring!

Carolina Herrera, Spring 2010. Mixing it up, but it still looks elegant.

Etro, Spring 2010. Very pretty, flowy, but still fun.

Marni, Spring 2010. For the girl who likes to keep it simple and enjoys earth tones.

Prada, Spring 2010. If you like your base color to be black, this is a good look.

Here are two tribal inspired pieces.

Marc by Marc Jacobs, Spring 2010.

Remember: have fun!!

Golden Globes

Awards shows always bring an array of beautiful women in beautiful dresses. At the 2010 Golden Globes two nights ago many wore rainbow-colored bracelets in response to the Haiti earthquake. Colors were toned down most likely also a response to the disaster, but those colors did not do any damage to the amazing dresses that showed up. My absolute favorite has to be Maggie Gyllenhaal whose dress was so elegant yet to daring. Starting at the bottom, there's a pretty mermaid tail but right above that is about 3 inches of sheer fabric which I thought looked really great, then layered pieces of raw silk folded and cut over and through one another to make intricate shapes all over the top part of her dress. It was one-shouldered too with the shapes going all the way up to the right shoulder. I give Maggie a 10 for this fun and classy dress!

Maggie Gyllenhaal in RM by Roland Mouret and Bulgari jewels

The rest of these dresses aren't going to go in any specific order but here they are!

Diane Kruger in Christian Lacroix Haute Couture with Chanel Fine Jewelry jewels and a Raven Kauffman clutch. I love how you can almost see-through Kruger's dress by seeing her left leg standing out and the forms at the top of the dress are very retro but then seem to flow into a classic and traditional dress.

Hello Christina! Aguilera looks fab in her new do and tight-fitted Versace dress.

Ok, so maybe this would come in second place! Sofia Vergarra shimmied into this unique Carolina Herrera dress worn with Chopard jewels, it's so different!

Zoe Saldana in a cranberry Louis Vuitton dress and Lorraine Schwartz jewels

Poor Fergie's lilac chiffon Elie Saab dress was stained from the rain at the bottom, but she still looked great!

Super sexy couple George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis, she accessorized her blush dress with a satin Ferragamo clutch

Emily Blunt in a Dolce & Gabbana dress, Lorraine Schwartz jewels and a Ferragamo clutch

Apparently shades of light pink were popular this year!

Trend Prediction: Lucite

Invented in 1931 by chemists at DuPont (American chemical company),lucite is a plastic that is crystal clear, is resistant to water and UV rays, and has low density. It was used a lot during World War II for supplies, but became popularized as a fashion statement (rings and handbags) in the 1950's. Lucite was good to give handbags a boxy shape and lots of people decorated their bags with confetti, jewels, flowers, etc.
1950's Lucite handbag

This spring, lucite has made it's way back into the fashion world! Accessories such as bangles, bracelets, earrings, clutches, pins and heels is where this trend comes into play. Here are a few things that were seen on the runway.
